Project Hail Mary is a science-fiction novel about Ryland Grace, a former scientist who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he is there.
As his memories slowly return, Grace discovers that Earth is facing a catastrophic threat. The Sun is losing energy because of microscopic organisms called Astrophage, which absorb sunlight and reproduce by releasing enormous amounts of energy. If the problem isn’t solved, Earth will eventually become uninhabitable.
Grace learns that he has been sent on a one-way mission to another star system to discover why some stars are being affected by the Astrophage and, hopefully, find a way to save humanity.
During his mission, Grace discovers another spacecraft—and another intelligent being, Rocky, an alien from a species called the Eridians. Rocky’s species is facing the same extinction-level threat. Despite having completely different biology, language, and ways of thinking, Grace and Rocky manage to communicate and become close friends.
Together, they investigate the Astrophage and discover that the organisms have a natural predator called Taumoeba. They develop a potential solution to stop the spread of Astrophage and save both of their civilizations.
However, the mission forces Grace to make an incredibly difficult choice. He ultimately decides to risk his life to help Rocky and his species, demonstrating how far their friendship has come.
The story ends with Grace surviving and living on an Eridian world, where he teaches young Eridians while humanity and Rocky’s civilization are saved.
