Alicia appears to have a perfect life. She is a successful artist married to Gabriel, a well-known fashion photographer. One evening, Gabriel is found dead in their home, shot several times in the face. Alicia is discovered beside him, holding the gun.
The shocking part is what happens afterward: Alicia never speaks another word. She refuses to explain what happened, defend herself, or communicate with anyone.
She is eventually placed in a secure psychiatric facility called The Grove.
Years later, Theo Faber, a psychotherapist, becomes obsessed with Alicia’s case. He believes he can get her to speak and discover what really happened to Gabriel. Theo’s wife, Kathy, has been having an affair with a man named Gabriel.
Theo eventually confronts Gabriel and discovers that Gabriel is the same man who has been having an affair with his wife. Theo secretly stalks Gabriel and ultimately confronts him.
But Theo’s connection to Alicia goes even further: Theo was the masked man who broke into Alicia and Gabriel’s house on the night Gabriel was murdered.
Theo had planned to scare Gabriel and punish him for the affair. He tied Alicia and Gabriel up and gave Gabriel a choice: save himself or allow Alicia to be killed. Gabriel chooses himself.
Alicia realizes what kind of person her husband truly is.
After Theo leaves, Alicia shoots Gabriel.
So Alicia wasn’t simply a random murderer. Her silence is connected to the trauma of what happened that night.
Theo later becomes Alicia’s therapist under a false identity and attempts to manipulate her into revealing the truth. Eventually, Alicia recognizes him and writes down the truth about him.
Theo discovers that Alicia has exposed him. He tries to silence her, but the police arrive and arrest him.
